Italian Government Scholarships for International Students: Promoting Education and Cultural Exchange. The Italian Government extends scholarships to foreign students and Italian citizens living abroad to facilitate international cultural, scientific, and technological cooperation.
These scholarships aim to promote Italian language and culture and contribute to Italy’s global economic system. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) administers these grants in accordance with Law 288/55 and subsequent amendments.

Study Program
The scholarships are available for various programs, including Master’s degrees (Laurea Magistrale 2° ciclo), Courses of Higher Education in Arts, Music, and Dance (AFAM), PhD programs, Research under academic supervision (Progetti in co-tutela), and Italian Language and Culture Courses.
Eligible Groups
The scholarships are open to students from eligible foreign countries.
Scholarship Funding and Duration
Tuition Fees
Depending on the university’s policy, grantees may be exempted from enrollment and tuition fees. However, for courses in Italian language and culture, enrollment fees are applicable.
Health and Medical Insurance
MAECI provides health and medical/accident insurance coverage for the entire duration of the grant. The insurance does not cover pre-existing physical and pathological conditions.
Financial Grant:
Grantees receive a monthly allowance of 900 Euros on a quarterly basis, which is deposited into their Italian bank accounts. The duration of the scholarship varies from six to nine months, depending on the type of course. Renewals are granted based on satisfactory academic progress.
Eligibility Criteria
Academic Qualifications:
Applicants must be foreign students not residing in Italy or Italian citizens living abroad (IRE)*. They should possess the necessary academic qualifications required for enrollment in an Italian university or institute. Detailed information can be found on the official website.
Age Limits
- For Master’s Degree/Higher Education in Arts, Music, and Dance (AFAM) Programs/Italian Language and Culture advanced courses, applicants should have reached the age of majority and should not exceed 28 years of age by the deadline, with exceptions for renewals.
- For PhD programs, the age limit is 30 years, with the same exception for renewals.
- For Research Projects under academic supervision, the age limit is 40 years.
Language Skills and Proficiency
Applicants intending to enroll in an Italian-taught course must provide a certificate demonstrating their proficiency in the Italian language. The minimum requirement is B2 level within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Candidates who have completed an Italian-taught course at a university may submit a language certification issued by a language teacher from the university department.
For English-taught courses, applicants must provide a language certificate demonstrating proficiency in English. The minimum requirement is B2 level within the CEFR. Self-certification may be accepted for candidates from countries where English is an official language and who are applying for courses taught entirely in English. Proof of proficiency in Italian is not required for courses taught exclusively in English.
For Italian language and culture courses, applicants must provide a certificate demonstrating proficiency at the A2 level within the CEFR.
No proof of language proficiency is required for PhD programs and Research projects under academic supervision.
