Scholarship Amount and Duration
The Excellence Scholarships at Leiden University are divided into three categories:
- 10% of the tuition cost (€ 10,000)
- The tuition cost is € 15.000.
- Tuition fee total minus mandatory tuition charge
It is important to note that the LExS is not a complete scholarship. Non-EEA LExS holders must still provide ‘evidence of sufficient money’ when applying for a student visa or residence permit.
Eligibility Criteria for Excellence Scholarships from Leiden University
Students must have excelled in their previous education, which must be related to the Master’s degree for which they are applying. As an indicator, the student was in the top 10% of his or her prior study program’s grads. Note that confirmation of ranking is not necessary; this data is provided just to demonstrate the degree of competition.
With the exception of students applying for the LLM Advanced Studies programmes or the MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy, which have no nationality restrictions, applicants must have a non-EEA/non-EFTA* passport and may not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans (Studiefinanciering).

Application Procedure for Excellence Scholarships from Leiden University
To apply for a Master’s programme at Leiden University, you must first apply online. In the scholarship part of your application, you must explicitly state that you want to apply for the LExS scholarship and attach your letter of motivation for the LExS scholarship. Programs beginning in September have a deadline of 1 February (exception: Advanced LLMs: 1 March), whereas programmes beginning in February have a deadline of 1 October.
